Just in time for Christmas, the first beta version of JoomGallery 4 was released.
With the publication of the Beta 1, we need many motivated testers to check the present situation of JoomGallery 4, looking for still existing bugs. By entering beta state, no more new features will be added until the official release version, with the exception of the gallery view in the frontend.
This version is compatible with Joomla! 4.x and Joomla! 5.x.
The volunteer team of JoomGallery friends continues working diligently on the development of the future JoomGallery 4 (for Joomla! 4, Joomla! 5). Currently, we do not foresee any complications for Joomla! 6, which will be released in two years.
Unfortunately, we are only a very small team pushing the development forward. We are always looking for help to make faster progress.
Changes compared to Alpha3
- An improved migration script
The migration script for migrating JoomGallery 3.x to JoomGallery 4.x has been improved and some errors have been fixed.
You can find more information and two videos here: Migration: JG3 to JG4
- Search engine friendly URLs
It is now possible to create SEF URLs in the frontend. To do this, three menu items will be automatically created during installation.
Â
- Checking access rights in the frontend
The access levels are now taken into account in the frontend such that unauthorized access is now denied.
Â
- Custom fields for categories and images
For the first time, user-defined fields (custom fields) can be created for categories and images. However, there is currently no output in the frontend.
Â
- The gallery view as an entry point into the JoomGallery
This view displays a wall of images regardless of their category structure. This view is still in development and will be completed before the official release. The aim is to have a home page view like the ones offered by large photo platforms such as Pixabay and co.
Â
- ... and many other smaller adjustments and optimizations of the existing things
Â
Until the final release of JoomGallery 4.0 no new features will be added. We will focus mainly on bug fixes and stability improvements until the official, stable release.
The development of JoomGallery will not be finished with the official release. The aim is to replicate the functionality of JG3 in future releases. But also new, interesting features are planned...
Attention!
Even though this version of JoomGallery is already well advanced: Do not use this version on a productive website. It is only intended for testing and trying out.
It is not possible to update from a previous alpha version or even from a JG 3 version to the current Beta1..
Please uninstall the previous version (alpha) and reinstall Beta1 and then test it!Â
The JoomGallery Beta 1 version can be downloaded HERE!
Here you can find the current language packs: Link
And now you come into play!
Download the newBeta1 version, you can upload it to your Joomla 4.x or Joomla 5.x test page as usual using the Joomla installer.
You will then find the JoomGallery4 beta1 version in the components of your installation. Now take a look at what already works and what has been changed. For example, test the image upload, category creation, tags and, if you have a JG 3.x, of course the migration script! You might even find some errors.
VERY IMPORTANT, you must report the errors to us so that we can work on them. The bug fixes can then be incorporated into the final version, which is already being programmed in the background.

What is this beta version really?
The beta version shows the current development status of the component on its way to the first stable release. We have reached a development status that can be installed and operated relatively error-free. We would like to share this development status so that everyone can get an idea of the development status and operation of the new JoomGallery version. We also want to use it to expand the circle of testers in order to receive even more feedback from users and to further refine and optimize the component.
What is this beta version NOT?
This is not yet the final release. So do not install this beta version in a productive Joomla! installation. This development version still contains bugs which in the worst case can lead to data loss. However, we encourage everyone to try out this beta version and tell us about your experiences and any bugs you find.
If you already have an alpha version installed, you must uninstall it first. There is currently no update path to update from an old JoomGallery 4 version.
How can I report bugs I find?
We prefer it if you open the bugs you find directly on GitHub in our development repository as a issue. This ensures that the error is checked by one of the programmers and not forgotten. If you don't know what to do with it or don't feel confident enough to post on GitHub, you can also report the error in the forum. We will then record your error correctly on GitHub.
How can I help?
The JoomGallery is a voluntary open source project. We live and exist from the community, i.e. the users of the JoomGallery. Help us to develop the JoomGallery (further) and make it available.
